Just over a year ago, the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee (ILSAC) introduced new standards for modern engine oils. For workshops and vehicle owners alike, this has brought a number of changes. The key message is clear: to reliably support modern engines, it is necessary to consider more than just viscosity when choosing an engine oil. Petrol and diesel engines are now more efficient, more compact, and more technically demanding than ever before. Two engine oils with the same viscosity grade can differ significantly in terms of their formulation, additive systems, ageing stability and protective reserves. For workshops, specialist retailers, and discerning vehicle owners, the specification is therefore becoming a key point of reference. 

New standards make performance measurable 
With API SQ and ILSAC GF-7A, new requirements for modern engine oils were introduced in spring 2025. They build on earlier standards and place additional areas of performance in the spotlight. These include improved fuel efficiency, reduced timing chain wear, optimised deposit control, protection for modern exhaust aftertreatment systems and consistent performance throughout the entire oil change interval. 
 
In doing so, the new standards underline just how much the role of engine oil has changed. It is no longer simply about reliably lubricating moving parts. Modern engine oils must deliver a complex combination of efficiency, component protection, cleanliness, material compatibility, and long-term stability. 

Advice is becoming more important 
For workshops and retailers, this creates an important advisory role towards consumers. Looking only at the correct viscosity grade is no longer enough. What matters is which oil matches the respective engine generation, usage profile, and manufacturer specifications. This applies not only to new vehicles, but also to many current vehicles already in use with turbocharged, direct-injection, or exhaust aftertreated powertrains. It also reflects a shift in perception: engine oil is moving away from being seen as an interchangeable consumable and towards a product that helps preserve protective reserves, unlock efficiency potential, and better manage the typical stresses placed on modern engines.
